Abstract

Education in entrepreneurship has been of growing importance as a way of instilling innovation, self-employment and economic growth in students. This research investigated the effect of entrepreneurship education on the intentions of higher-ed students to start-ups. The quantitative research design has been chosen and primary data gathered by using a structured questionnaire given to a sample group of students pursuing business and related courses. Descriptive statistics, correlation and regression analysis were used to analyse the data and establish the relationship between entrepreneurship education and startup intention. The results obtained showed that the students had positive perception of entrepreneurship education and that the mean scores revealed favourable attitudes towards entrepreneurial learning. The findings also showed that there is a strong positive correlation between entrepreneurship education and the intention to start a business and that the more the students are exposed to entrepreneurial knowledge, practice training, and institutional support, the more willing they are to establish their own business. The results of the regression analysis revealed entrepreneurship education to be an important predictor of the intention to start-up with a significant proportion of variance. It also underscores the significance of experiential learning styles and the need to create a conducive environment within institutions to improve the translation of intention to real entrepreneurial actions. The results offer useful suggestions to teachers, policy makers, and educational institutions on how to implement strategies that will motivate students to be entrepreneurs.
